About Calvos de Randín
Calvos de Randín is situated in the province of Ourense, bordering on Portugal, in the foothills of Larouco, Da Pena and Xurés. It has an oceanic climate characterized by law temperatures and heavy rainfall, subjected to hard summer drought though.
The mountainous lands close the region and A Limia depression on the South East, bordering on Portugal.
The bordering situation of Calvos de Randín interfered with the historic evolution of this village. Rubiás, Santiago and Meaus, that today form part of Baltar and Calvos de Randín, belonged to a mixed reserve and enjoyed privileges such as tax exemption and the choice of belonging to a kingdom or another. The special jurisdiction was favourable to economical activities and even smuggling. O Cebreiro and Aguioncha in Feás and the Salas valley, whose river forms a pool in a dam, are remarkable spots. River Firbeda Waterfall and Serra da Pena are two worth seeing natural spaces with magnificent views. Regarding historic and artistic heritage, we can stand out ‘Castro de Paradela’, Santiago dos Mistos Church, ‘praza do Eirao’ and several antique ovens and cruceiros.
The medium elevation fluctuates between 900 and 1100 metres, but in the Southern sector on the border to Portugal the elevation goes up to 1400 in some points of Serra da Pena. Regarding hydrography, River Salas, the main tributary of River Limia, covers the village from East to West up to Salas dam that extends to Muíños and crosses the Portuguese lands between both rivers. The rest of them are minor rivers and streams that flow into the River Limia basin through either the River Salas or River Firbeda.
The whole district council has an area of 98 square kilometres.
